The Concord School District is proud of its role as the public school district in the state's capital city. The district is comprised of eleven schools, nine elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. One of the elementary schools has been temporarily closed due to low enrollments. Concord High School is the location of the regional technology center with a wide range of career and technology programs available to junior and senior students in the neighboring communities as well as Concord. The district employs nearly 900 people and runs its own food service and transportation services.
The district's vision is that all Concord students develop a passion for learning, experience excellence in their lives and believe they have the ability to shape the future of their lives and communities.
When our students cross the stage at Memorial Field at graduation in June, we want our students to be active, self-directed learners; effective communicators; effective collaborators; informed decision makers; creative producers; life planners; and community participants. These goals provide the framework for our curriculum.
The district has focused on implementing a rigorous curriculum in reading, writing and math at the elementary level and the results of this implementation are beginning to show in our state assessment results. On the fall 2006 state assessment in reading, the percent of students beginning grades three through eight scoring at the lowest level to 10%. Fifteen percent of the students in the elementary and middle grades tested scored in the highest category in reading. At the middle school the faculty has been using differentiated curriculum and instruction to better meet the needs of all students in their classes. The high school is in the final stages of developing and implementing school wide assessments of their graduation standards and by the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year the high school will have the first set competencies prepared for each high school course.
Throughout the district educators have been using an approach to curriculum development and instruction that emphasizes teaching for understanding. Teachers articulate the "big ideas" that are the foundation of the unit or course and students explore "essential questions" throughout the unit or course.
