School Highlights

One of the highlights of Maude H. Trefethen Elementary School is technology. The students in kindergarten through fourth grade utilize an apple lab to create slide shows, learn keyboarding skills, explore web sites, and use Apple works to build personality cubes. The fifth and sixth grade classroom has a mobile cart with an ibook for each student’s use. They are presently working on projects in language arts, social studies and science through the use of this technology. Each staff member at MHT has a laptop which they are using to record their curriculum objectives on tech paths. The staff is also using digital cameras to create classroom slide shows for the Explorations in Learning evenings. A technology goal is to acquire SMART boards for each classroom.

Another highlight at the Maude H. Trefethen School is the installation of a new playground. The funds for this learning environment came from the annual road race sponsored by the recreation committee, Parent-Teacher organization and residents of the town. This play area consists of equipment from Learning Structures, a new improved baseball diamond, a tree patio with its own learning garden, picnic tables and benches for a quiet rest.

The exceptional music program, instructed by Mrs. Maria Isaak is another highlight. Within the last three years the music program has grown from classroom instruction to general music classes in the Kodaly method, a school chorus, and a beginning and advanced band program. For the last two years the students have had the opportunity to audition for the National Oake Chorus. We have been fortunate to send students each year.

Our last highlight is the World Language Program. Students in kindergarten, first and second grades are instructed in Spanish by Senora Berman twice a week. They travel the globe each year studying the culture of two or three Spanish speaking countries. Children in grades three through sixth study French. Each year they have the opportunity to participate in the Le Grand Concours National French contest. This test gives our students the opportunity to share their knowledge within a three state competition. Every other year the students in the fifth and sixth grade travel to Montreal or Quebec on a World Language field trip. They are immersed in the French culture for three days.
